Lauded as one of today’s most unique musical-performance groups, Denver-based 57 piece band, Itchy-O is known for having a driving drum corps battery, taiko drummers, an arsenal of electronics including synthesizers, theremin, vocoders, and other custom-made sonic devices. Itchy-O completely engulfs an audience from every angle in an electric bog of music, ephemera, and spectacle.

To enhance their already established dark, theatrical “in-person” brand feel and to translate this vibe to their very important online presence, Itchy-O needed a modern, aesthetically pleasing, website and eCommerce solution to carry through their unique concept to the digital space, all the while creating consistency with their brand standards.


what we did

First, we took a deep dive into the band history as well as their inspirations influences and visual appreciations. We quickly realized the need to design to a very futuristic, tribal, almost cult-like aesthetic and audience.

Next, to solidify a design look, we decided upon the Neue Haas Grotesque typeface throughout the site, not only for its legibility, but its versatility as headline type, particularly with a stroked online. We also decided to keep the color palette relatively monochromatic and making most imagery grayscale (aside from album release art, and merchandise), only with a spot red color to evoke a rather loud and contrasting mood throughout the user’s website experience. Finally, to pull through a bit of grit, wherever possible we’re using a custom tin-type texture overlay to give images and backgrounds a weathered, distressed look.

Regarding the website development, we built a custom WordPress theme, with a fully integrated WooCommerce shop to sell their band merchandise and limited edition content. We made the backend custom fields as simple and dynamic as possible as to keep the client willing and capable of quickly creating and publishing event and album release content throughout the site. We also developed a custom Vimeo script to display a video on the homepage that also accommodated for the mobile video experience. Additionally, we made sure that the gritty aesthetic was balanced out by smooth and elegant loading animations and fluid transitions, all the while not compromising site speed and load times.

Finally, we summarized our brand efforts with a cohesive brand book for the client to allow for consistencies with poster designs and band-produced merchandise & promotional materials.

A very modern, relevant tool for the enhancement of this already locally-iconic, burgeoning band/creative concept was released. Itchy-O now can confidently offer their fans and the press a one-stop source to take a deeper dive into their concept, events, music releases and their media, all the while allowing for online sales to be generated through their WooCommerce shop.
